Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply for the CDCP?
You can apply for the Canadian Dental Care Plan online through the Government of Canada. Visit canada.ca/dental to check your eligibility and complete your application. Our team is also happy to help guide you through the process.
Who is eligible for the CDCP?
To qualify you must be a Canadian resident, have no access to private dental insurance, have an adjusted family net income under $90,000, and have filed your current tax return. The plan now covers Canadians of every age. You can confirm whether you’re eligible at canada.ca/dental.
What services are covered under the CDCP?
Covered services include preventive care (scaling, polishing, sealants, fluoride), diagnostic services, restorative services, endodontic services, prosthodontic services, periodontal services, and oral surgery services. Not all services are covered, and patients may owe additional costs depending on their co-payment level.
Am I eligible for the CDCP if I already receive coverage from provincial government programs?
The CDCP is designed to work alongside provincial programs. It will not duplicate benefits you already receive, but may cover additional services that are not included in your provincial plan. Contact us to discuss your specific situation.
What is included when they say dental insurance?
When the government refers to “dental insurance,” they mean coverage through an employer, pension plan, or privately purchased dental plan. If you do not have access to any of these, you may qualify for the CDCP.
Should I cancel my private insurance?
The government has said that the CDCP is not intended to replace existing workplace or private dental benefits. If you currently have private coverage, it is recommended that you keep it.
When can I get my CDCP benefits?
Once you have been approved for the CDCP, Health Canada will send you confirmation through Sun Life, who administers the plan. You can then begin using your benefits at our clinic.
Should I wait until the CDCP is launched before visiting the dentists?
No. It is important to continue with your regular dental checkups and not delay care. If you need treatment now, come see us and we can discuss your options for payment and coverage.
Will I lose my dental coverage at work when the CDCP comes out?
This is a concern for many Canadians. The CDCP is not intended to replace employer-provided dental benefits. However, there is ongoing discussion about the potential impact on workplace dental plans for the two-thirds of Canadians who currently have employer coverage.
