First steps while you get to the clinic

What you do in the first few minutes can matter, especially after a knock to the mouth. If a tooth has been knocked out, follow these steps and call us immediately:

1. Pick the tooth up by the crown (the white chewing part), not the root.
2. Rinse it gently. Do not scrub it.
3. Try to place it back in its socket, or keep it moist in milk or in your saliva.
4. Call us and come in right away.

For a broken tooth or a painful swollen area, avoid chewing on that side and call us for guidance on the way in.

Some emergencies are settled in one visit. Others lead to further treatment, which we explain before anything is done.
